Commission’s guidance to Disinformation: We need legislation and oversight, not co-regulation

European Parliament Freedom, democracy and transparency Press releases

Today, the Commission published its guidance on how the Code of Practice on Disinformation should be strengthened to become a more effective tool for countering disinformation.

MEP Patrick Breyer (Pirate Party) comments:

“We need platform regulation by legislation and oversight rather than pursue the failed approach of voluntary codes of practise. These closed-door deals sideline democratic and judicial scrutiny, they lack transparency and civil society participation. The specific proposals put forward by the Commission don’t go far enough in failing to give users control over recommender algorithms and phasing out manipulative advertising. On the other hand the Commission goes too far in relying on pervasive tracking for issuing warnings and in targeting private communications services.”

Breyer is the LIBE Committee‘s Rapporteur on the Digital Services Act.
